Design Ignites Change - Projects - Zeal: Energizing Students

Nearly half of all high school students in Kansas City don’t graduate. Students note a lack of connection to school, boredom, and personal issues contributing to their decision to drop out. Zeal is a speaker series designed to get high school kids excited about finishing school. Speakers come from the local community and include a range of athletes, artists, and corporate professionals. Zeal will provide students with five speaker sessions during the school year. Speakers talk to students about their careers while after-session workshops provide the students with meaningful insight and hands-on experience in learning a career-specific skill.

Not all high school students are going to listen to someone tell them that they need to stay in school, especially if they are having a hard time. How do we keep their interest in school and show them how vital it is to their success without directly saying, “don’t drop out of school?”

A speaker program where people come talk to students about their successes, their struggles and how they got to be in that career. It proves to the students the relevance of school, and helps them understand that being successful isn’t always easy, but if they pull through there will be greater rewards.
