Design Ignites Change - Projects - NOW: Images of Hope

The neighborhood surrounding Kansas City's Troost Ave. can be identified by it's beautiful wall murals, interesting people and decades of poverty. The object of NOW is to have thirteen children from this neighborhood take their future and their sense of pride into their own hands. With the help of a single disposable camera, they would develop a series of images portraying scenes of hope or pride in their life. With the help of fellow neighbors they would then get to display their images right in the heart of their neighborhood. The goal would be to have a full scale event that would drive a new wave of hope and pride within the community.

the booklet and camera

In a community of generational poverty there is a sense of hopelessness and vulnerability that is inherent in daily life. The challenge is to give this forgotten community a glimmer of hope and a sense of pride; both of which would be fuel for a movement towards change.

Every child would receive two booklets and two cameras. The booklets would give simple directions about using the cameras, thinking about hope and pride in their life, and lastly, sharing their second camera and booklet with a friend or neighbor. They would develop their images and display them to the rest of the community.
