We interviewed sixth grade students from the School for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. We asked them to sort foods into categories such as what is “adult” food and what is “kid” food. We then asked them a series of questions about where food comes from and what they eat on a regular basis.

Many of the student answers were the same when it came to “good” food. Chicken nuggets, macaroni & cheese, pizza and other processed foods were for kids. Healthy fresh foods were for adults. We were looking to get kids thinking about what they eat, where food comes from and what happens to food before it hits their plate.

Sidebars_solution

We created a book that students could interact with, learn from and become empowered by to become an active participant in the food they eat. It includes information about where food comes from, activities to promote food awareness, healthy recipes, and pages where the students can record their own explorations.
