In Spring 2010, Designmatters and the Product Design Department at Art Center partnered with Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala City for “Creating Social Value Through Design” studio. The focus of this studio was to address the environmental breakdown and dangerous bloom of cyanobacteria threatening Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. Faced with the threatening of cyanobacteria in Lake Atitlán, the students were challenged to bring their unique skills and approaches to formulate concepts designed to restore and sustain Lake Atitlán and its people.

After returning from field research in Guatemala, the class focused on developing a variety of projects to help identify opportunities for sustainable development in Lake Atitlán: The class proposes Atitlán Azul, an initiative to engage and mobilize the whole Lake Atitlán community.
