I grew up in Alentejo, Portugal, where my family and neighbors sat outside everyday. Whether on benches or in their own chairs, they stayed for hours relaxing and talking. In those days we felt closer and people were more engaged with each other and the community. As Alentejo has grown and society has changed because of developments like television, there is increased social isolation. Chairs for Alentejo is an initiative created to bring people into the streets with their chairs to spend time together. The goal is to reduce social isolation and loneliness in the community by reinstating an old habit and turning it into a new way of living.

Despite being surrounded by others, people in Alentejo - like in other cities - live more alone and isolated then ever before, especially the elderly - a large portion of the population. How do you bring back an old way of life to break down these barriers?

The project will launch as a print, online and video campaign, using the chair as a metaphor for community interaction. An open call for old chairs will be released and local artists will be invited to create symbolic chairs that will magically appear throughout the community.
