Graphic Design Practicum, working with PennPraxis the clinical research arm of PennDesign, designed information graphics panels to tell the highly-charged story of the displacement of an African American community, Black Bottom, in West Philadelphia by redevelopment in the 1970’s. The installation site is a wooden gateway to a working garden farmed by Urban Nutrition Initiative (UNI) and University City High School students located at the heart of old Black Bottom. One panel was designed to house an updateable gallery of photographs to suggest the changing population of the school and community.

Nearly 40 years later, the controversial redevelopment of the 70’s still has its advocates and detractors, so it was important for all voices to be heard. Interviews and engagement with community leaders, former residents, historical archives, Penn staff, and the high school garden crew informed the process and outcome.

The students of the garden and construction crews at University City High School shared ideas and designs which enabled Graphic Design Practicum to develop 4 site-specific information panels that tell the history through quotes, maps and photos. The panels were created to be as vibrant and interactive as the garden itself.
