Students of the advanced study course in graphic design saw the need for a clear, organized and unbiased location directory for the Downtown Grid of Sacramento, California. The directory would appear in the form of a web site that would allow for accessible connectivity between individuals and the businesses and attractions they sought.

As active residents of Sacramento, the students understood the street grid that defined the geographic layout of their city. The students determined that the current directional tools alienated many of the locals and could be redesigned to encompass Sacramento’s diverse demographic. A web site and iPhone Application were chosen as the media formats for this project.

The students did extensive interviews prior to developing the directional system that formed the foundation of the program. The identity symbol was an abstract representation of the Sacramento Bridge, reinforcing the city and the idea of unity. Based on this core identity symbols were designed to represent the subcategories of downtown locations and attractions.
