On 12/15/10, Columbia College Chicago students threw what they called a Zero Waste Party to promote eco-friendly practices. The students, enrolled in a course called Citizen Designer, hosted the party/exhibition about sustainability and waste. Throughout the space, there were documentary projections about the effects of waste, demonstrations on composting and ways to reduce and reuse waste around the house, as well as recycling demonstrations using the very posters and materials used to promote the event. Food was provided, waste-free of course, as well as free prizes and giveaways. Absolutely nothing from the party contributed to landfills.

Since most of what designers do is ephemeral and ends up in landfills and couple that with advertising for and hosting events/parties the act of design can be quite a wasteful exercise.

Sidebars_solution

Students as part of a two part course called Citizen Designer were charged with designing and throwing a party that educated the community about sustainability and waste. Their solution had to be 100% waste free, contributing noting to landfills.
