Sidebars_aboutproj
Southwest Detroit is the most ethnically diverse area of the city, and one of the only neighborhoods to see an increase in population. This is due to the influx of immigrants. Though struggling with the same problems as the rest of the city, this working class area has continually maintained a sense of community with a unique charm. The book is a collection of artifacts, both high and low, that celebrates this community’s distinctive identity. To have an authentic perspective, I invited artists and residents to submit work. While contacting people, I was always welcomed. This eagerness and warmth exemplifies the passion of Southwest Detroit.

Sidebars_challenge

To create a project that positions the idea of change in Detroit in a positive light. So much negative press about Detroit makes it difficult to see it in a new way. This project was to use design thinking to create positive change.
