Nestled in the forest of Northern California’s Calaveras County is the small community of West Point. The West Point Fire Association brings members together for the betterment of the firefighters and the community. The WPFA provides programs of education, training, purchase of equipment, etc. In September 2010 the West Point Fire Association approached the graphic design department of The Art Institute of California-Sacramento and requested their assistance in designing an identity symbol for the WPFA organization. This is the first phase of an extended communication program.

The graphic design students were provided a variety of conceptual topics to be integrated into the new identity symbol and visual support elements. Each student worked independently on the concept development and execution of their design exhibits. The association is required to provide a large quantity of printed documents supporting their awareness and education programs. The new identity symbol must be correctly reproduced in a single color and due to the low availability of funding for print production.

Following a three month process including client interviews, a visual audit, creative development and refinement a presentation was given by the student design team to the West Point Fire Association members. The members considered the identity attributes that the design must address and the restricted implementation requirements. A final selection was made designed by Tiffany Valdez. The success of the project has encouraged plans for additional collaboration between The Art Institute of California-Sacramento and the West Point Fire Association. The extended applications of the new graphic identity will aid in improving communication with the community and association fund raising efforts.
