American Samoa is ranked as number 7 globally for a population that is suffering from high levels of obesity. The Pacific Health Club (PHC), a nonprofit organization, promotes exercise and a healthy life style specifically for Pacific Islanders. Communicating directly to this audience required a strong graphic brand to compete for visibility in the competitive health and exercise market. The Graphic Design department of The Art Institute of California–Sacramento volunteered to create a new and effective marketing personality for the PHC organization. Under the theme line “Choose Change” a brand program was developed. This effort resulted in the design of the primary graphic elements and implementation applications including: Stationery System, Web Site, Promotional Flyers, Marketing Brochures, etc.

The student design team was challenged to create communication elements that were to be directed to a specific culture. Their message concerned critical health and life style issues pertaining to a large percentage of their audience. Awareness and sensitivity to these issues were critical to the success of the brand program.

The Pacific Health Club brand design uses a color palette that reflects the history of the Pacific Island culture. The use of this palette, along with symbolic applications and appropriate typographic elements, creates a spirit of positive activity and accomplishment. The launch of the total communication program has encouraged the PHC members to improve their life and to “Choose Change”.
