East Palo Alto Phoenix Academy is a charter high school located in an extremely underprivileged community surrounded by great affluence. Mixed grade students embarked on a project to change their community by sending positive messages. They began by researching the issues plaguing their community: gangs, drop-out rates, poverty, health care, education etc. After spending a few weeks on research, they create messages to change East Palo Alto. This group of students, from freshmen to seniors, worked collectively to generate a series of positive, community-building messages that they felt were needed in the

Sidebars_challenge

Students were challenged to identify the greatest issue in East Palo Alto and to create a billboard message to change it. Students focused on issues ranging from family relationships to gang violence, education to drugs.

 
Sidebars_solution

Students came up with various solutions through positive messaging on billboards. They also created blogs, websites and public service announcements that were played on the radio.
