Vital Jeans originated from an assignment we were given in experience design class. The main goal and focus was directed towards the sustainability of a particular product. After a week audit of our most used objects, we chose jeans. We decided to focus specifically on women because of the large number of unused pairs in their closets. Once our research was complete, we focused on recycling and relabeling the jeans and distributing them back into the community by selling the jeans at a low cost.

On average, women have an average of 5 unused pairs of jeans in their closet. This makes 2.5 million pairs of unused jeans in Detroit alone. This is the same city that has over of quarter of it’s population living in poverty. We wanted to get the jeans out of the closet and into the hands of people who need them.

We collected a total of 90 jeans in a three week period. We stitched and tagged each pair and took them to an Earth Day event in Detroit's Cass Park. The event was set up to promote recycling and sustainability in the city of Detroit. The money raised along with the remaining jeans were donated to the Barat House.
