In partnership with GOOD Magazine, the Academy of Art University’s School of Graphic Design mobilized its students to deploy design to address real problems within the city of San Francisco. GOOD Magazine challenged students to address intractable social and sustainable problems that confront the city. Undergraduate and graduate students identified, researched, and tackled these challenges with unique, sustainable solutions. Student teams were asked to consider involving the communities in devising the solution to the problem at hand. Team Furniture: Kayla Ferriera, Sa Nguyen, and Sarah Seward. Instructor: Tom Sieu.

The frequent relocation of residents and lack of an effective method for the disposal of unwanted furnishings in San Francisco conspire to create an abundance of abandoned furniture on city streets, most of which falls to ruin before it can be reclaimed and thus needs to be hauled away and disposed of at taxpayer expense.

Team Furniture’s solution is to employ skilled craftsmen in the form of the Urban Furnishing Project. By collecting abandoned furniture and then either refreshing, refurbishing or repurposing it, they will prolong product lifespans and extend usage, thus dramatically reducing municipal waste, landfill and expense.
