In partnership with GOOD Magazine, the Academy of Art University’s School of Graphic Design mobilized its students to deploy design to address real problems within the city of San Francisco. GOOD Magazine challenged students to address intractable social and sustainable problems that confront the city. Undergraduate and graduate students identified, researched, and tackled these challenges with unique, sustainable solutions. Student teams were asked to consider involving the communities in devising the solution to the problem at hand. Team Runoff: Jaime Patino-calvo and Vilmundur Sveinsson. Instructor: Tom Sieu.

Stormwater runoff starts out as relatively pure rainwater, but collects pollutants and toxins as it flows over impervious surfaces on its way into the San Francisco Bay. These polluted stormwater flows are the Bay’s biggest pollutant by volume and thus incredibly detrimental to its ecosystem.

Sidebars_solution

The Urban Runoff Project seeks to slow down the rapid flow of stormwater by creating pervious surfaces where possible, capturing rainwater and storing it in cisterns incorporated into buildings, bridges, and other civi infrastructure. Water is filtered and reused, decreasing the city’s dependence on far-off water sources.
