Parsons The New School for Design

Park It is a mobile community garden on wheels that transforms existing parking spaces into green space. This mobile and nomadic platform rethinks the notion of green infrastructure such as parks and public space. Park It might land in your community equipped with soil and seeds. It might extend a retail storefront allowing for additional seating and public space. You might see a Park It parade at your next block party. This urban tactic gives individual community members the agency to determine where and when they might ‘Park It’ and catalyzes creative ideas about what makes our communities livable.

It's not a car, it's not a garden. It's a Park It, which can be a platform for a community's needs.

We asked community members how they would 'Park It' through this interactive physical mapping and exhibit in North Williamsburg. Park It Zones, Car Memorials, Park It Parades...were just a few ideas.

Park It brings together community members to engage, enabling conviviality and the ability to green your own infrastructure.

Car infrastructure accounts for 80 percent of New York City’s total public space while less than 50 percent of New Yorkers own cars. Top-down planning solutions often leave us with streets that are more concerned with seamless traffic flow and homogeneity rather than places that allow for conviviality and social resilience.

Park It is a bottom up solution that forces communities, in a good way, to talk to one another and to determine the right conditions in which Park It can live and be shared by the community. Simple to build and infinitely reconfigurable, Park It aims to catalyze creative communities in unexpected ways.
