Sidebars_aboutproj
This design project is a placemaking toolkit that aims to increase the participation of non-active community members through a series of creative activities that explore the aspirations and needs of Congressional District 39. The tool also serves to educate the benefits and impact of the participatory budgeting process. The three phases to the deck of cards are: Engage: shift perspectives of community members. Educate: provide an introduction to PBNYC to those who are less empowered. 3) Act: Provide resources on how and why to vote in March 2012 and to encourage participation in the larger conversation.

Placemaking
How might we increase participation in Congressional district 39 through motivating non-active community members to participate in reimagining their neighborhood?
Diagram
This deck of cards facilitates small group activities with 3 main goals: 1) To engage in activities that shift perspectives. 2) Education around PBNYC and 3) Action, how to submit ideas and vote.
Perspective
We believe that being immersed in your environment and looking at your space through specific lens helps to create ideas about reconfiguration.
Perspective2
There are different playful activities included so that participants can pick and choose how to view their space in order to propel ideas forward.

The rest of the pack aims to educate what PBNY is, how to submit ideas, what makes ideas eligible and most importantly, how to vote on the strongest ideas/needs for community and when.
Sidebars_challenge

For the first time in history, NYC is experimenting with Participatory Budgeting, generating ideas on how capital dollars are spent. While communities grapple with the difficulties of organizing into assemblies in order to navigate and manage this process there remains a huge gap in knowledge about what PBNY actually is.

Sidebars_solution

By rethinking one’s relationship to the surrounding environment new ideas can be created and citizen voices can be heard. Allowing community members to share their ideas fosters stronger communities and increases agency for New York citizens. Our placemaking tooklit aims to engage, educate and encourages action and voting.
