Sidebars_aboutproj
This magazine was the first one in Portland, OR, and a chance to partner with an amazing group in town called Caldera Arts. The project was run like a design studio with the youth involved in brainstorms followed by making/creating sessions. A small group of dedicated youth met every Wednesday to make decisions and be introduced to design concepts. We were able to include youth from Central Oregon in collaging sessions once the theme was finalized. In the end the youth were highly involved in creating a sophisticated product that was designed, with the help of re:active mentors, to really bring out the power of the youths voice.

Sidebars_challenge

The challenge was to create a compelling, collaborative magazine with an unknown theme. First we had to find a theme that was relevant to all and that would require some forethought. The creation of the final project is the other half of the battle. There are many challenges in working with others and negotiation is key.

Sidebars_solution

Guided by the re:active staff, the youth were full of ideas even though they couldn't see how their work and ideas would turn out like the previous ones. A certain amount of faith and the perseverance to keep going was required. These are some dedicated young people working on top of their already busy lives to do this.
