This is really the beginning of re:active magazine. It started with a grant from Sappi paper's Ideas That Matter campaign. I was introduced to a group of amazing people that were teaching poetry in the correctional facilities. We hit it off and I was up there every week. I wanted to give them something back for the hope they had restored in my life and this was it. Through poetry and imagery it explores the feelings of a group of youth hardly ever asked how they feel. I have so much respect for the Street Poets and will always be moved by the work they do. This is listening to them in color. Winner of Communication Arts Design Award, 2005.

A photo by Jonathon Hexnor that really captures the story of many of these youth. The photo is of George, one of the Street Poet's success stories.

The challenge was to match the intensity of the work and emotions that the Street Poets organization brings out in these complex youth.

Sidebars_solution

With Jonathon Hexnor's photography leading a group of amazing photo storytellers, this thing was off to a good start. Careful editing of the student voice to include a range of topics and intensity levels helped bring a dynamic voice to the mix. My job was the easy part. Picking through so many amazing things. What a week.
