Flint, Michigan has an ongoing pattern of defining itself by its industrial base. As this base changes, buildings are repurposed and street names are changed in an attempt to re-brand the city. Without a consistent identity to point to, people often only know Flint by the negative media coverage and are unaware of the positive developments currently taking place.

Sidebars_challenge

The challenge was to create a lasting identity system for a city that is constantly changing. By providing a consistent base for change, the city can adapt and move forward instead of starting over.

Sidebars_solution

Building upon Flint's push toward green developments, we created a system which utilizes solar powered LED lights to identify features of the city. As infrastructure changes occur, the LEDs can be updated easily with very low cost impact to the city.
