Sidebars_aboutproj
This project is one of six from the "stART now: change is central" mentoring program that unites Central High students and the University of Tennessee Graphic Design students in Knoxville, TN. This project was developed by Team Green. Knoxville is in the foothills of the beautiful Smoky Mountains. However, it is not without its environmental problems. Design students from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville teamed up with Central High School Art students to find a way to make Knoxville a “greener” place to live

The box will be stamped out of food-safe PETE or HDPE plastic. The Chinese-style box is washable, foldable and reusable. This box design is courtesy of packagetech.

Students proposed to the school that by connecting a simple light-detecting circuit to the outdoor lighting system, the light would come on only when needed.

Sculpture: 463 times the amount of bottles it took to make this sculpture are thrown away every minute in the U.S.
Sidebars_challenge

Knoxville is home to many chain restaurants and as a result many Styrofoam take-home containers end up in nearby landfills. The challenge we defined for ourselves was to stop the waste, or at least make people think twice about the amount of garbage they toss away when they go out to eat.

Sidebars_solution

We wanted a solution that solved the waste issue, developed a better sense of community pride and created a greener Knoxville. Our solution was KNOXBOX!—A reusable take home container, specifically designed for our city. We have developed a logo and are currently researching plastic fabricators in the area.
